Background

The Artigny Pluton was introduced by Talla Takam et al. (in preparation) following geological mapping work carried out by the Ministère in the Léran Lake area during the summer of 2016.

Description

The Artigny Pluton consists of biotite-magnetite ± hornblende granite and quartz monzodiorite, locally granodiorite, having a well-developed porphyraceous texture. Granite is homogeneous, pinkish grey or yellowish grey, massive to slightly foliated and medium to coarse grained. This highly magnetic intrusion is clearly visible on aeromagnetic maps. The porphyraceous texture is related to the presence of 10 to 40% K-feldspar phenocrystals 1 to 5 cm long, more or less aligned with the magmatic foliation. The rock also contains biotite (1-15%), hornblende (up to 12%) and magnetite (2-5%). Sphene and garnet are also present as accessory phases (trace-2%). Locally, the rock contains up to 5% hypersthene. Paragneiss enclaves probably belonging to the Laguiche Complex are reported.

Thickness and distribution

The Artigny Pluton is located west of sheet 23D15 and is 25 km by 13 km in an N-S orientation.

Stratigraphic Relationship(s)

Rocks of the Artigny Pluton are among the latest in the area. Only rocks of the Viau Suite, dated to 2572 Ma (Parent, 1998), are younger. They are intrusive in sedimentary rocks of the Laguiche Complex.
