Background

The Sanigitik Suite was introduced by Simard et al. (2008) to group diatexites that represent the melting product of paragneiss of the Arnaud Complex‘s western part. This suite includes biotite-garnet diatexites that had been assigned to the Faribault-Thury Complex (abandoned term; Cadieux et al., 2002, 2004), orthopyroxene diatexites that had been included in the MacMahon Suite (abandoned unit; Cadieux et al., 2002, 2004), and heterogeneous diatexitic granodioritic rocks assigned to the Faribault-Thury Complex (Leclair et al., 2001, 2002; Leclair et al., 2003).

Description

The Sanigitik Suite consists of yellowish brown diatexite biotite-garnet diatexite and biotite-orthopyroxene diatexite, foliated to gneissic and heterogeneous, both at the outcrop and sample scales (Cadieux et al., 2002, 2004; Leclair et al., 2001, 2002; Leclair et al., 2003; Simard et al., 2008; Simard, 2008; MNRF, 2010a-c). Hornblende, clinopyroxene and magnetite complete the mineralogical assemblage. The rock contains biotite schlierens and numerous centimetric to decametric enclaves (40-70%), stretched in foliation, and composed of paragneiss, iron formation, amphibolite, diorite and leucocratic tonalite. The whitish to greenish mobilisate, of tonalitic to granitic composition, represents up to 60% of the total volume of the rock.

Thickness and distribution

The Sanigitik Suite is found in the Isurialittaalik Lake (sheets 34P15, 34P16, 35A01 and 35A02) and La Potherie Lake (sheets 24L12, 24L13, 34I09 and 34I16) areas. It occurs as elongated bodies about 15 to 30 km long over a maximum width of ~7 km.

Dating

None.

Stratigraphic Relationship(s)

Diatexites of the Sanigitik Suite represent the melting product of metasedimentary rock units in the western area of the Arnaud Complex (Simard, 2008). Although no dating has been carried out on these diatexites, it is likely that melting of paragneiss in this area is contemporaneous to melting of paragneiss observed elsewhere in the Minto Subprovince, which is responsible for diatexites of the Le Roy Complex (2697-2668 Ma) and Rivière aux Mélèzes Suite (2668 Ma) (Simard et al., 2008).
