Background

The Rivière aux Mélèzes Suite was defined in the Nedlouc Lake area (sheets 34H and 24E) by Parent et al. (2000, 2001) to describe diatexite located in the Goudalie Domain. Simard et al. (2008) also assigned a small strip of diatexite located in its SE extension (Maricourt area, sheet 24D), which previously belonged to the Du Gué Complex (abandoned term).

Description

The Rivière aux Mélèzes Suite consists of yellowish grey to rust-brown biotite-garnet-cordierite-andalusite-sillimanite diatexite (Parent et al., 2000, 2001; Berclaz et al., 2001, 2002; Simard, 2008; Simard et al., 2008). Orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and hornblende are absent (Berclaz et al., 2001, 2002), which distinguishes this diatexite from that of the Lac Minto Suite (Parent et al., 2000, 2001). The leucosome is heterogeneous, monzogranitic to granodioritic in composition, and mostly porphyritic. The paleosome is fine-grained mesocratic. The neosome contains metric to decimetric enclaves of paragneiss and, more sparsely, mafic to intermediate gneiss, as well as millimetric biotite and sillimanite schlierens. These schlierens define a more or less developed foliation that undulate around garnet porphyroblasts and feldspar phenocrystals. The neosome contains biotite, poikiloblastic garnet (with quartz, plagioclase, biotite, cordierite, magnetite and sillimanite inclusions), cordierite, andalusite, sillimanite (with green spinel inclusions locally), and zircon. In places, plagioclase is sericitized, while biotite and garnet are partially retrograded to chlorite.

Thickness and distribution

The Rivière aux Mélèzes Suite extends over approximately 125 km long and 25 km wide, in sheets 24D13, 24E04, 24E05, 34H01, 34H08, 34H09, 34H10, 34H15 and 34H16. It covers an area of ~1000 km2.

Stratigraphic Relationship(s)

Diatexites of the Rivière aux Mélèzes Suite have the same characteristics as those described in the Ashuanipi Subprovince (Percival et al., 1992; Leclair et al., 1998; Lamothe et al., 1998) and elsewhere in the NE Superior Province (Percival et al., 1991). Parent et al. (2000, 2001) observed that heterogeneous diatexite masses are in gradual contact with homogeneous granite and granodiorite masses. These relationships indicate that at least some of these granites and granodiorites are products of magma crystallization derived from a more important intracrustal anatectic process than that which causes the diatexites.
